چکیده

This paper presents an overview of the CERES project. It demonstrates how algorithm improvements have lead to improved top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative flux accuracy. CERES shortwave flux anomalies are compared with those from Earthshine and ISCCP-FD. OCIS codes: (010.1310) Atmospheric scattering

Determining the Relationship between the Total and Window Channel Nighttime Radiances for the Ceres Instrument

Observing Earth’s radiant energy budget from space is critical to improving our understanding of Earth’s climate system. The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) (Barkstrom 1984; Barkstrom and Smith 1986) was the first initiative to provide simultaneous observations of Earth’s radiant energy with identical instruments flying aboard separate satellites. The design of the ERBE instrument was ...

Relationship Between TOA Albedo and Cloud Optical Depth as Deduced from Models and Collocated AVHRR and ERBE Satellite Observations

It has long been recognized that clouds have a large influence on the earth’s radiation budget and climate. Current cloud and radiation research programs, such as the Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) and the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program, play important roles in obtaining an accurate knowledge of clouds and radiation and their interactions. The study of the rel...

Radiative effect of cirrus with different optical properties over the tropics in MODIS and CERES observations

[1] The radiative effects of cirrus clouds are evaluated based on observations extending over a period of six years (2000–2005) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) over the Tropics (25 S–25 N). The cloud radiative effect (CRE) shows a positive sign for optically thin cirrus (total-column cloud optical depth:...

Mineral Dust Impact on Short- and Long-wave Radiation and Comparison with Ceres Measurements

Clear-sky downward and upward radiative flux measurements both in the shortand in the longwave spectral range have been used to estimate and analyze the radiation changes at the surface due to the mineral dust advection at a Central Mediterranean site. Then, shortand long-wave radiative fluxes retrieved from the CERES (Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System) radiometer sensors operating o...

CERES Cloud Property Retrievals from Imagers on TRMM, Terra, and Aqua

The microand macrophysical properties of clouds play a crucial role in Earth’s radiation budget. The NASA Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) is providing simultaneous measurements of the radiation and cloud fields on a global basis to improve the understanding and modeling of the interaction between clouds and radiation at the top of the atmosphere, at the surface, and within the ...
